Backhouse was delighted to find a well preserved time capsule behind the date stone marking the old Westbury hospital.
Recognising the significance of the find and the importance of the former hospital to the local community, we invited the Westbury Hospital League of Friends to join us to review the contents and talk about what future items we should be putting in a new time capsule.
Amongst items found were an 1897 copy of The Wiltshire Times, a brass lighter, shaving soap and a sheet from the service held in honour of the hospital opening. These remarkable artefacts provide a useful insight into 19th century life and are a valuable reminder of how people and place are so intricately integrated.
We plan to reference the heritage of the hospital site with a piece of art located in our vibrant, new residential development.
